Tributes pour in for Ricky Hatton, dead at 46

Boxing was dealt the biggest blow this morning when news of Ricky Hatton's death was announced today on September 14, 2025.

The former world champion was found dead in his Manchester home at approximately 6:45am this morning.

His worried family raised the alarm after he failed to turn up at an event with one of his boxers last night. He was due to attend the Man City vs Man United derby today with a table booked in the corporate section of the stadium.

Hatton received an MBE for his services to sport in the 2007 New Years Honours.

His untimely death came 15 years on from one of his darkest moments in his life, when he was admitted to a rehabilitation facility, on September 13, 2010.

He willingly went to The Priory, in Roehampton, London, for substance abuse to tackle a drink and depression problem. Doctors there said they were more worried about his depression.

In 2023, a documentary made by Dan Dewsbury, simply titled 'Hatton', was released exclusively on Sky TV. It explored Hatton's career, focusing especially on his relationship with trainer Billy Graham. Well-received by both audiences and critics, the programme was nominated in 2024 for the BAFTA in the Single Documentary category.

He is survived by his son Campbell, who recently announced his retirement from boxing . Ricky's older brother Matthew was also a pro boxer, who once fought against Canelo.
