Corrections

We get things wrong sometimes. Boxing moves quickly, fights get announced and cancelled within hours, and records held by different sources disagree more often than they should. When we publish something inaccurate, we correct it openly rather than quietly.

How to report an error

Use the report an error form and tell us which article, which detail and what the correct information is. If you can point us at a source, that speeds things up considerably. Reports go straight to the editorial team and we aim to respond the same day.

What we do about it

Factual errors are corrected as soon as we can verify the right information. Where the correction is material, meaning it changes the substance of the story rather than fixing a typo or a formatting issue, we add a dated note at the foot of the article explaining what was changed and when. We do not silently rewrite a piece that people have already read and shared.

Where a story has been overtaken by events rather than being wrong when published, we update it and change the modified date, and where the change is significant we say so in the article.

Where a result has been amended by a commission after the fact, whether overturned on appeal or changed to a no contest, we amend the record and note the change. We do not delete the original entry.

What we will not do

We do not remove accurate reporting because a subject would prefer it were not there. We do not amend quotes after publication unless the original transcription was wrong, in which case we say so. If you dispute the substance of a story rather than a specific fact within it, write to us and we will publish a response where the point is fair.
