Title fight on Subriel Matias-Dalton Smith card cancelled

The Subriel Matias-Dalton Smith undercard has been dealt a devastating blow

The super-lightweight championship clash between undefeated prospect Hendri Cedeno (16-0, 12 KOs) and world title contender Alfredo Santiago (17-2, 8 KOs) is off after Cedeno didn’t pass an unspecified medical exam that was conducted by the New York State Athletic Commission.

Broadway Joel was first to report on X that Cedeno is unable to fight, tweeting the news as soon as it broke: "Due to Hendri Cedeño not passing his medical. The NYSAC has cancelled his fight with Alfredo Santiago."

The WBO NABO and WBO Intercontinental 140lbs titles were on the line, but the double belt battle has now been cancelled, weakening the undercard, which British fight fans were already begrudging paying the PPV prices of £41.95.

Puerto Rico’s Matias (23-2, 22 KOs) will defend his WBC super lightweight title against England’s Smith (18-0, 13 KOs) in the main event at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The card will be streamed on PPV.com.

The 27-year-old Cedeno, of La Romana, Dominican Republic, is ranked WBO #10 at 140 pounds. The undefeated contender stopped Idalberto Umara after six rounds in his last fight on April 18.

33-year-old Santiago has won five from his last six showings after defeat to Devin Haney in a WBC world lightweight fight in 2019.

The championship clash between the duo of Dominican titleholders was an attractive prospect for fight fans, so the cancellation is a huge blow for spectators and for the fight card too.

It's currently unclear if the fight will be rearranged at a later date.
