The fight is planned to take place at the beginning of 2026

Following Jaron Ennis’s (34-0, 30KO) move to the 154-pound division, there has been discussion about what is next for the Philadelphian boxer.

Eddie Hearn said Jaron Ennis and Matchroom have agreed to the stipulations of the contract on their side.

He Told IFL TV: “Everything that was discussed and agreed, Jaron Ennis has signed a contract to fight Vergil Ortiz, done."

He added: “we are in for that fight, you don’t have to worry or wait for that fight.”

The former WBA and IBF welterweight champion was on the road to undisputed in the 147- pound division, only needing two fights with WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr and WBC champion Mario Barrios to capture all the belts. But a fight with Norman Jr failed to get past the contract stage after the WBO champion's team felt the offer from Matchroom was too low.

Ennis then decided a surprise move to the light middleweight division was best due to him finding it difficult to make 147-pounds, impacting his performance, and to fight better competition.

He told YSM Sports Media: “I've been at 147 for almost ten years, I've been making that weight for a long time and I feel the time is right, it’s time to feel myself.”

He added: “There are bigger names at 154 and a lot more tough guys, I feel like nobody will duck any smoke.”

Vergil Ortiz Jr (23-0, 21KOs)  reportedly has a fight scheduled for October against Keith Thurman and Hearn said that Boots has an upcoming fight before a clash with Vergil Ortiz Jr but didn’t name the opponent.

He told IFL TV: “This is the move to 154, this is the only fight he takes which will be a good fight, the person he is fighting is a dangerous fight.”

According to the Matchroom promoter, the fight against Ortiz Jr will take place in January or February and is yet to be accepted by Vergil Ortiz and his team.
