Undefeated champion Ben Crocker (14-0-1, 2 KOs) defends his IBF European super-lightweight title to Irishman Sean McComb (19-2, 5 KOs) on Saturday, September 27 at the Canon Medical Arena, Sheffield, live on DAZN .

The 140-pounders headline the GBM Sports show, titled ‘On the Edge’ , which also features a British title fight between super-bantamweights Tysie Gallagher and challenger Ellie Hellewell.

Fight Preview

Crocker, 31 from Swansea, won the IBF strap in his 14th fight, last December, and now defends it for the second time.

In his maiden title defence, in April this year, he was held to a draw by undefeated challenger Tiernan Bradley (10-0-1, 5 KOs), who is also Irish, at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London. The scores were 97-93 each, with the third at 95-95.

His next challenger also comes from Northern Ireland, Belfast boxer McComb, who has lost just twice in 21-bout pro career - to Welshman Gavin Gwynne in their 2021 Commonwealth title clash, stopped in the seventh; then outscored narrowly by Arnold Barboza Jr. in their WBO Inter-Continental fight in April 2024. One judge had 98-92 to McComb, but the split decision was ruled in American sensation Barboza's favour, who went on to defeat Jack Catterall three months later, which propelled him into a WBO world super-lightweight title fight next.

Now 33, McComb, known as ‘The Public Nuisance’, has scalped the likes of British and Commonwealth champ Sam Maxwell; Midlands Area titlist Kaisee Benjamin; British title contender Ronnie Clark, who also won an IBF European belt himself; and Southern Area winner Siar Ozgul, so he certainly possesses the edge in experience.

Styles

It's set to be a technical shootout, with the odds suggesting it could be another draw on the cards.

The champion Crocker is a stand-up tall fighter, who likes to flick out his lead left jab with speed and vim. He is disciplined and cautious, doesn't overcommit or lose his shape very often, unwilling to step too close, too soon. He slips shots well and likes to counter.

Because he’s quite a straight-shooter, the 30-year-old doesn’t tend to land very many big hooks or uppercuts, which is why he only has a 14% KO ratio.

Challenger McComb is also not necessarily known for being a big puncher either, perhaps because he has such an awkward style, where he flicks his shots out from his hips. His lead right hand hangs just above his hip where he sends it upwards at awkward angles.

He has a very fluid and flashy, bouncing on his tiptoes, and possesses stylish and elusive upper body movement, enabling him to evade attacks, which is why he’s so confident at boxing with his hands down.

He has the upper hand in experience, but will be competing in enemy territory against an unbeaten prospect being lined up for bigger things.

Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: Sean McComb has just taken a world title contender, Arnold Barboza Jr, the distance over 10-rounds and had a valid reason to be upset when his hand wasn't raised.

The likes of Sam Maxwell, Kaisee Benjamin and Ronnie Clark as scalps on his resume just shows the level that he's at, and I think he might be above Crocker at this moment in time.

Crocker is the unbeaten champion, with all the confidence that comes with that, but he came close to being dethroned by Tiernan Bradley recently, who really thought he had won the fight after the final bell sounded. Is he closing in on a loss as he goes up in levels?

Crocker can be quite reactive to what’s in front of him, so when McComb feints or jerks, it will likely delay Crocker’s attacks or push back his plans, potentially upsetting his rhythm and pace.

McComb is nicknamed the ‘Nuisance’ because that's exactly what he is - tricky and frustrating. If the Irish southpaw can be as awkward, slick, jerky and busy, like he so often is, then he may be able to pick and move his way to a points win, but he has to keep up that energy for 30 minutes, which is a hard ask.

McComb has the advantage in experience going into this fight, plus his style can cause so many problems, but he has to be at his best for the full 10-rounds, as he is fighting in the away corner and will need to really dominate and land eye-catching shots in order to rip that title away from the champion on his home show.

Prediction: McComb to win on points

Chief Support

In the chief support bout, reigning British and Commonwealth super-bantamweight champion Tysie Gallagher (9-2) returns to the ring to take on undefeated challenger Ellie Hellewell (7-0, 1 KO), with Tysie's WBO International.

The sharp southpaw champion, 27 from Luton, makes her third consecutive title defence and faces an all-action contender taking her first shot at these prestigious belts.

Unbeaten Hellewell is 25 from Yorkshire and defeated Stevi Levy over 10 rounds last May to earn her shot.
