Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing's rising prospect Alex Vargas (15-0, 5 KOs) made a statement under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden on Friday night, defeating previously unbeaten Rani Jalomo (7-1-1) by unanimous decision in an action-packed eight-round junior welterweight bout at the Infosys Theater. Judges scored the contest 78-74, 78-74, and 79-73 in favor of Vargas.

Fighting on one of boxing’s biggest stages, the Bellport Long Island native showcased poise, pressure, and ring maturity in a high-tempo battle between two undefeated prospects. Vargas consistently controlled the pace, landed the cleaner power shots, and dictated exchanges throughout the night to preserve his unbeaten record and move to 15-0 as a professional.

The matchup was finalized by the Star boxing team on short notice after a late opponent change earlier in fight week, but Vargas never missed a beat. From the opening round, he established his right hand, mixed in effective body work, and pressed the action against a determined Jalomo, who entered the bout with an undefeated record of his own.

As the fight progressed, Vargas’ experience and composure became the difference. He repeatedly backed Jalomo to the ropes, worked effectively on the inside, and closed several rounds strongly with sharp combinations and sustained pressure. Jalomo had moments of success, but Vargas’ consistency and command of the action earned him a clear decision victory.

The win was particularly significant for Vargas, who was returning from the longest layoff of his professional career. Rather than showing rust, he delivered one of the strongest performances of his career on a national stage.

Star Boxing CEO Joe DeGuardia praised his young contender’s performance.

“Alex showed exactly why we believe in him,” said DeGuardia. “He handled adversity, stayed composed, and delivered on a major stage against a tough unbeaten opponent. This was a big step forward in his career.”

With the victory, Vargas continues his rise in the junior welterweight division and further establishes himself as yet another Star Boxing developed top prospect.
