Jin Sasaki retains OPBF title with Spectacular KO in Tokyo

In a bout packed with intensity and punching power, Japanese champion Jin Sasaki successfully retained his Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) Welterweight Championship by knocking out challenger David Ssemujju in the sixth round, adding the Japanese and WBO Asia Pacific belts in the process.

The clash, held on September 21, 2026, at the Tokyo Tama Mirai Messe and presented by Hachioji Nakaya Promotions, pitted Sasaki against Ssemujju (the Japanese national champion and WBO Asia Pacific champion) in a high-calibre unification showdown.

Fight Action

Fighting in his hometown, Sasaki enjoyed the full backing of the crowd from the opening bell. The defending champion imposed an aggressive pace early on, while Ssemujju sought to establish range with his jab and left hook.

Early Onslaught: In the second round, Sasaki stepped up the pressure, targeting the body before landing a short left hook that sent Ssemujju to the canvas for the first time.

Fight Back and Cut: Ssemujju responded bravely in rounds three and four, mixing his attacks to the head and body. In the fourth round, an accidental clash of heads caused a cut over Sasaki’s right eyebrow.

Midway Scorecards: By the end of the fifth round, open scoring revealed Sasaki leading on all three judges’ scorecards by 48-46.

The Finish: In the sixth round, Sasaki landed a thunderous right cross followed by a left hook that sent Ssemujju to the canvas for a second time. Although the Ugandan-born fighter rose to his feet, the referee completed the 10-count at 0:58 of the sixth round, declaring a knockout victory for the local star.

With this victory, Jin Sasaki completed his first successful OPBF title defence and solidified his status as unified three-belt welterweight champion.
