Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn - Who wins WBC World welterweight title fight?
Ryan Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs) confirmed the fight with Conor Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) on September 12 in Las Vegas when appearing on The Jimmy Fallon show this week.
The 27-year-old Californian will defend his WBC World welterweight title to the WBC #1 contender from England.
29 from Essex, 'The Destroyer' has won his last two bouts against former super-lightweight world champion Regis Prograis and IBO titlist Chris Eubank Jr. However, the ageing Prograis was carrying an injury into the 150lbs catchweight contest and Eubank Jr was weight-drained and exhausted in their rematch due to the rehydration clauses imposed.
'KingRy' dropped Mario Barrios in the opening seconds of their February fight to win on points to become a world champion for the first time. However, he has only won two from his last five fights, so his form hasn't been at its best.
This makes for a close match between two very loud, colourful characters, guaranteed to bring entertainment in the build-up all the way up to the first bell.
BBN asked their panel of experts who they are backing to win this battle of welterweights.
Abel Sanchez, World champion trainer: "Possibly a good scrap, Garcia has the psychological momentum, I think he has the feel of what his best approach to whomever is in the ring with him, Benn is still trying to figure out his identity in the ring, I think he has to pick a style and practice to perfection, he can probably outbox Garcia if he settles down and can be more authoritative in dictating his ring generalship, if not, Garcia’s power will determine the outcome."
Larry Olubamiwo, Southern Area heavyweight champion: "Ryan Garcia destroys Conor Benn. Simple as that."
Miles Shinkwin, English light-heavyweight champion: "I loved his dad, I’ve met him a couple times too, and he was absolutely spot on. Conor isn’t his dad, however, and while he’s got some dog in him, his skillset is miles behind Garcia, and the power he had seems to have left him as of late for unknown reasons.
"I expect Garcia wide or possible late stoppage/corner pull Benn out."
Arijan Goricki, IBO title contender: "My prediction is Garcia by split decision. I think that Garcia speed will be something Benn didn't experience yet. And probably judges will lean towards Garcia."
Tony Tolj, Dragon Fire Boxing: "That fight will be huge, massive eyeballs on the sport, which is a good thing.
"If Garcia is on track and focused, I think its his fight to lose. He's a great fighter, Connor is great fella, I've spent a bit of time with him and I would like to see him get the chocolates, but I think it may be just be a bridge to far to cross at the moment, but, in professional boxing, anything can happen."
Burim Sylejmani, Fides Sports Promotion: “I believe Conor Benn will win this fight. He brings tremendous pressure, high intensity, and a very strong mentality into the ring. Ryan Garcia undoubtedly has great qualities, but in my opinion Benn is the more aggressive and hungrier fighter. If he puts Garcia under pressure early and makes the fight physical, I see the advantage on Conor Benn’s side.”
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: "I think Ryan Garcia has the advantages over Conor Benn to win this - his speed, sharpness, power, greater experience at the top level. His ring IQ and defence is a little underrated too.
"I'm not ruling out Benn, however. Despite all the drug scandals, he is a consummate professional in how he prepares for fights, albeit having the millions behind him to hire the top live-in nutritionists, chefs and staff etc. He will come into the world title shot fully prepared, bringing his natural aggression and heart, and I expect him to be as sharp as a razor. There's a possibility he could prevail on points with a clever, calculated, careful performance.
"I don't believe he knocks Garcia out. Benn seems to have lost his power since his last fight at welterweight four years ago. Ever since he failed those drugs tests, he hasn't scored a knockout since, which could be coincidence, but it also seems a little suspect.
"Garcia has been guilty of not preparing for fights properly, showing signs of struggling with his mental health in the past. But now that he is world champion after so many ups and downs, I believe he will be at his best for this one, especially as it's going to be a grudge match, like his fight with Devin Haney was. He needs to maintain the distance and flick out his shots with speed, not overloading or allowing Benn to get inside and rough him up.
"I think the build-up is going to provide so much attention, as these two big characters are going to make the world take notice while they've got their moment in the spotlight.
"Good luck to both boxers, but I'm picking Garcia on points."
Aqib Tahlat, BBN writer: "I think it’s more than a closer fight than people think.
"Benn brings relentless pressure, aggression and real spite in his combinations. At his best, he drags opponents into uncomfortable exchanges and forces a pace that can mentally break fighters down. His confidence and physicality would absolutely create moments in the fight, especially early when he’s explosive and dangerous.
"But Ryan Garcia gets the edge because of the level of experience he’s already had on the world stage. He’s shared the ring with elite names, handled massive events, and operated under intense pressure and scrutiny. That matters in a high-profile fight where emotions, composure and timing become just as important as power.
"Garcia’s speed is still probably the defining factor. His left hook is one of the quickest and most dangerous shots in boxing, and against an aggressive fighter like Benn, opportunities would naturally appear in transitions and exchanges. Benn’s forward pressure could actually play into Garcia’s counter-punching rhythm if Ryan stays disciplined.
"The biggest question is whether Garcia can handle sustained pressure over the second half of the fight. Benn would likely target the body, rough him up inside and try to turn it into a dogfight rather than a technical contest. If it becomes chaotic, Benn’s chances rise significantly.
"Still, the prediction leans toward Garcia because of the higher-level experience, sharper shot selection and ability to produce fight-changing moments instantly. Benn would have success and make it uncomfortable, but over the stretch, Garcia’s timing and world-level seasoning could separate them.
"Prediction: Garcia by late stoppage or competitive unanimous decision."
