Rolly Romero shared his frustrations over his inactivity and even called himself 'retired'

Rolly: "I don't really have a choice at this point whether I fight or not"

Two-weight world champion Rolly Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) spoke exclusively to British Boxing News in association with Campobet about his frustrating inability to land a fight.

Romero hasn't fought in over a year, his last outing was in May 2025 when he defeated Ryan Garcia at Times Square in New York, retaining his WBA Regular welterweight world title via unanimous decision. He was elevated to full champion soon after when Jaron Ennis vacated.

The 30-year-old provided BBN with a surprising update on his stuttering career, "I'm a retired investor on a pension. I don't really have a choice at this point whether I fight or not."

When pushed about the potential fights out there for him, he answered whether he would like to fight the winner of Garcia-Benn, "They didn't want to fight me. They just don't want to go and do it. These guys are scared, they know its damaging to their career. Because it's not just damaging to their health, it's damaging to their boxing career, to their source of income, towards whatever lie that they've told themselves. On top of that, dealing with me, who is going to humiliate you over and over again as I beat your face in. There is no winning in this for them and they know that."

He then waded in on Devin Haney and his father Bill, calling them both bullsh***ers, "I said 'ok, let's do it', and I sent the contract and where'd they go? Run and hide. It ain't no fun when Rolly has the gun. The second Rolly grabs the gun they all go hiding.

"Whenever they do their stuff for the media, like, 'oh Devo is coming after you', and all that, I don't know what Bill [Haney] is on, and I'm like 'yeah, whatever', but it got to a point where I just couldn't do it no more, so I did the only thing an actual person that wants to make a fight happen do - I sent a contract, with a very lucrative offer, which he acknowledged that it was a very lucrative offer.

"He BS'ed for a whole month and then he said that we were underpaying him. Do not believe the Haney's, they are deceitful people."

Despite his inactivity, the American confirmed he is still fit, sharp, and on weight, "I'm a welterweight, I'm in my actual weight class. Bro, who moves up in weight and gets stronger, faster and more explosive? How did I get stronger, more powerful, more explosive, more and more sharp, how does that happen? My body was completely depleted at 135lbs and 140lbs. Now I got all my muscles back, it's incredible."

He concluded with determination that no one out there is willing to fight him, even though he holds the WBA World welterweight title, "Because in no world am I the worst champion in boxing and whatever, but I cannot get a fight... when I'm 'an easy belt', so someone must be lying."

DID YOU KNOW? Romero is of Cuban descent and his father, Rolando Romero Sr., was a top amateur boxer who won the Cuban National Title three times.
