Fight Preview

The USC Galen Center card will feature a blockbuster showdown this Saturday, August 29, 2026, between two elite super middleweight knockout artists.

The Guatemalan champion risks and stakes his interim crown against a Croatian challenger seasoned by Olympic experience and the WBC International belt.

30-year-old champion Martinez (20-0-1, 16 KOs) enters the bout after capturing the WBC Interim title earlier this year, a historic benchmark for the sport in Central America after becoming his country’s first professional world champion, whilst cementing his status as one of the leading names in the 168-pound division and moving closer to a shot at the full world championship.

The Central American star remains unbeaten in 21 and will look to take another major step toward the top of the division. His only draw on his record came against Christian Mbilli in 2025, who defends his WBC super-middleweight title to Canelo in September. He has an 80% KO ratio.

With a reputation reinforced by formidable punching power and having accumulated valuable experience as a sparring partner for superstar Terence Crawford, the Petén fighter aims to solidify his position as mandatory challenger to the absolute 168-pound throne.

Standing across the ring will be Croatian 'Thunder' Plantic, a strong European contender and the current WBC International super-middleweight champion.

The 29-year-old Croatian won the title in 2024 and has since defended it four times. The No.1 in Croatia and WBC #4 views this fight as the biggest opportunity of his career and will attempt to take Martinez’s title, while inserting himself into the world title conversation. He has an 76.92% KO ratio.

Zagreb's Plantić was a standout amateur who represented Croatia at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in the light heavyweight division, capturing the bronze medal at the 2022 European Championships.

Standing at 5’11½”, the Luka combines an orthodox stance, exceptional distance control with explosive combinations, and the ability to close the distance on shorter opponents.

The matchup features two of the most promising rising contenders in the super middleweight division and could have significant implications for the WBC championship picture.

Prediction

Tim Rickson, GBN Editor: "Lester took some big shots in his war with Christian Mbilli as the pair traded in close quarters for 12 full rounds. The Guatemalan is clearly hard to beat. Luka Plantic looks like a top prospect on his way up, but I don't believe he is ready to take on the likes of Martinez yet. I think that his punches are a little wide, perhaps lacking a little power, leaving himself open, which an experienced inside fighter like Lester will be able to exploit. Martinez has gone the 12 round distance in his last two fights, but I think he could win this one by stoppage after the first quarter of the contest has passed, so around the midway mark onwards."
