James Metcalf set for first defence of WBA Continental super-welterweight crown against Brooklyn's Courtney Pennington

Briton James Metcalf (23-2, 14KO) will return to the ring this Saturday, December 10, to defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) Continental super-welterweight crown for the first time against Brooklyn's Courtney Pennington (16-5-3, 7KO) at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, England, on the undercard of Josh Warrington's IBF featherweight world title defence to Kiko Martinez.

'Kid Shamrock' is coming off an upset win over Kerman Lejarraga in Spain, whom he defeated by unanimous decision in May this year. Following that career-best win, Eddie Hearn rushed to get his signature and he joined the Matchroom stable in June.

The 34-year-old puncher is the son of Liverpool fight legend Shea Neary and has earned back-to-back wins since teaming up with top trainer Joe McNally at the renowned Rotunda ABC in Kirkdale, where he trains and fights alongside former world champion Liam Smith.

Metcalf's 26th opponent will be Pennington, a 36-year-old American who is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Greg Vendetti in Washington in October.
