Great-grandson of pioneering boxer Larry Gains releases debut children’s book with a message beyond the ring
The great-grandson of Canadian boxing pioneer and former British Empire Heavyweight Champion 'Larrupin' Larry Gains has launched his first children’s book, combining an imaginative time-travelling adventure with important life lessons for the next generation.
Michael Gains, an English author based in Cardiff, has self-published his debut children’s book, Jack the Boxer – The Future Adventure, officially released on 5 November 2026.
Aimed at children aged 6–12, the book marks the beginning of a planned series exploring kindness, respect, courage and good manners through exciting adventures that extend far beyond the boxing ring.
The story follows 11-year-old Jack, who trains with Coach Larry in the 1920s before receiving a mysterious golden pocket watch that transports him to Toronto in the year 2125.
In this futuristic world, Jack discovers that being a true champion is about much more than winning fights or achieving success in sport. The choices we make, the way we treat others and the kindness we show in everyday life are just as important.
Although Coach Larry was inspired by Michael’s great-grandfather, the story itself is entirely Michael’s own original creation and represents a personal project, separate from his involvement with The Gains Heritage Foundation.
Michael, a father of two, explained:
“I wanted to create a story that children and families could enjoy together, while sharing important values that can make a difference in everyday life.
“Although boxing plays a part in Jack’s adventure, the message goes far beyond sport. Being a true champion isn’t about being the strongest or winning every time. It’s about showing kindness, treating others with respect, making the right choices and having the courage to do what’s right, even when nobody is watching.
“I also included my two sons, Logan and Luca, as characters in the story, which makes the book even more special to me. It’s something I hope they will treasure as they grow older.”
A Family Connection to Boxing History
Michael’s great-grandfather, Larry Gains, was born in Toronto on 12 December 1900 and became one of the most significant Black heavyweight boxers of his generation.
Despite facing racial discrimination throughout his career, Gains achieved remarkable success, defeating future world heavyweight champion Max Schmeling in 1925 and Italian heavyweight Primo Carnera in 1932.
In 1931, he became British Empire Heavyweight Champion after defeating Phil Scott, overcoming significant barriers during an era when racial discrimination restricted opportunities for Black boxers.
While Michael’s family heritage provides a special connection to the sport, his journey into children’s writing is driven by his own creativity and desire to encourage positive values among younger generations.
A New Adventure Begins
Michael hopes Jack the Boxer – The Future Adventure will be the beginning of a successful series, with further adventures already being planned.
The book also features five hidden Easter eggs relating to Larry Gains, encouraging children and families to explore the illustrations closely and discover special connections to the boxing pioneer’s remarkable life and legacy.
Michael added:
“My hope is that children enjoy the adventure but also take something meaningful away from it. If the story encourages even one child to show more kindness or respect towards others, then that would mean a great deal to me.”
Self-published through Ingram Spark Jack the Boxer – The Future Adventure represents an important personal milestone for Michael as he begins his journey as a children’s author.
