John Ryder floored four times by Mexico's Jaime Munguia

England's John Ryder was knocked down four times before being stopped in the ninth round by Jaime Munguia on Saturday night.

The 35-year-old, who lost on points against Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez last year, was dropped in the second round and again in the fourth on January 27 in Arizona. Munguia, 27, then floored him twice in the ninth round before Ryder's corner stopped the fight.

Ryder was content to hold his feet and take the centre of the ring and he countered very well all through the fight, but he stayed still for too long in the second stanza to be dropped by a flurry from the Mexican then he walked onto a big shot in the fourth to go down a second time. Ryder landed some big shots on Munguai but failed to cause any reaction from him. Ryder's preference to box at mid-range meant he was constantly in the line of fire. Just 30 seconds into the ninth, the powerful Mexican landed a huge single overhand right that he really leaned into. It stunned the Brit visibly and another flurry of shots put him down again. He bravely continued but the corner threw the towel in, unseen by the referee so eventually the bell was rung mid-round to signal the end of the contest.

The win improves Munguia's record to 43 wins without a loss, whilst Islington's Ryder is considering retirement.

His next opponent could be fellow countryman Canelo Alvarez, saying post-fight that it would be an "honour" to share the ring with him.
