Yulihan “Cobrita” Luna spurred on by contesting WBC title

On October 31 at the Oasis Arena in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico, the bantamweight champion of the World Boxing Council, Mariana “Barby” Juárez (59-9-4, 18KOs), will defend her title against the dangerous Yulihan “Cobrita” Luna (19-3-1, 3KOs).

Five-foot-tall Yulihan, 26 from Durango, who was already a world champion in 2014 (IBF World Female super-bantamweight title), is training hard with the command of her father and coach, former boxer Julio Luna, and she is motivated by the opportunity to be crowned Green and Gold world champion.

She will be up against the toughest of tasks with 'Barbie' in front of her, who has held onto her WBC baulble tightly for nine successful defences over the past three years plus. The 40-year-old marvel, who turned pro last century in 1998, won the prestigious prize back in April 2014 and now enters into her 10th defence of the green and gold belt.

Juárez only won nine from her first 15 fights between 1998-2003, losing out on her first ever title shot for the national Mexican bantamweight belt. She never gave up and won the Mexican flyweight title in 2008 on her second attempt at becoming a national champion. In the same year, she won the WBC International flyweight strap and that victory set her on course to be a feamle boxing superstar. The relationship with the World Boxing Council as a champion has lasted a further 12 years. She claimes the interim World flyweight title the following year in 2009 and defended the belt an astonishing six times! She then earned her shot at the WBC World flyweight title and took the chance with both hands, defeating unbeaten Italian Simona Galassi in 2011.

She defended that title successfully seven times before moving up to super-flyweight and then settling in as a bantamweight, where she has become a two-weight world champion that has sat on her throne for three-and-ahalf-years now.

In another match, WBC light flyweight champion Yesenia “Niña” Gómez will face undefeated Mirna Sánchez.
