WBC mourns the death of Jean Claude Bouttier

The World Boxing Council and its President Mauricio Sulaiman paid tribute to former European champion Jean Claude Bouttier from France.

Jean Claude, who died as a result of throat cancer, is remembered for having two tough, exhilarating fights with former Argentine world champion Carlos Monzón.

The WBC said in tribute: "The entire WBC sends its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Jean Claude. What a fighter and what a man!"

Jean-Claude Bouttier was born 13 October 1944 and passed away on 3 August 2019.

He was an actor as well as a professional boxer. During his boxing career, which spanned from 1965 to 1974, he won a staggering 64 from 72 bouts, 43 impressively by knockout. In June 1971 he won the European Boxing Union (EBU) middleweight title, and in 1972 and 1973 unsuccessfully contested the WBC and WBA titles against the legendary Carlos Monzon.

He lost the EBU title to Kevin Finnegan in May 1974.

Bouttier started his film career by playing himself in TV series, whilst still boxing. His later roles involved Philippe Rouget in Les Uns et les Autres. Since 1984, he worked as a sports commentator for Canal+.
