WBC announce their August 2026 Boxer of the Month

Shokichi Iwata (17-2, 14 KOs) is named the World Boxing Council's August Boxer of the Month, with unbeaten world champ Bruce Carrington (18-., 10 KOs) receiving an honourable mention.

Shokichi Iwata, from Tokyo, Japan, delivered a flawless and dominant display of courage and championship class to successfully defend his WBC World Light Flyweight title, defeating his mandatory challenger, Erick Badillo of Mexico, via an 11th-round technical knockout on July 20 in his home city.

30-years-old from Shibuya, Tokyo, Iwata is a two-time light-flyweight champion, having held the WBC title since March 2026, and previously the WBO belt from 2024 to 2025. He has also won national and regional titles as a pro. He became Japanese light-flyweight champion in his seventh bout.

WBC World Featherweight Champion Bruce 'Shu Shu' Carrington (US) delivered a star-making performance to retain his crown with a unanimous decision victory over the dangerous Rene Palacios, on July 4 in Ohio, showcasing his supreme technique and maturity signature.

Brooklyn boxer Carrington, 29, won the vacant featherweight strap with a ninth round knockout of Carlos Castro in nearby Times Square in January. Now he has made his first successful defence just four months after being crowned champion.

In order to earn his shot, 'Shu Shu' previously won WBO, IBF and NABF regional titles, It was claiming the WBC Silver title in 2024 that saw his name shoot up the rankings to challenge for the WBC Interim belt in 2025, leading to his world title shot in 2026.
