Victim of the Coronavirus, Nelson Cuevas sadly passes away

Coronavirus claims victims Nelson Cuevas and Angelo Rottoli

The Coronavirus claimed one more victim, famed coach Nelson Cuevas, whose dedication to boxing spanned almost six decades.

Cuevas from New York was a professional welterweight from 1964-70, before the late legend Cus D’Amato convinced him to start training boxers. Cuevas opened his own gym, the Apollo Boxing Club, in 1976 in the Bronx, where a young Mike Tyson worked with Cuevas at one point.

During the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, Cuevas worked in countless corners as a coach and as a cut man.

Cuevas continued working in his later years at Mendez Boxing, gym in Manhattan. A native of Puerto Rico, Cuevas was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame on November 14 at The Venetian in Garfield, New Jersey.

On the very same lamentable day, the death of the Italian fighter Angelo Rottoli was confirmed.

Angelo, former Italian, International and European champion of the WBC (cruiserweight and heavyweight), died yesterday in Bergamo, Italy, at the age of 61, as another victim of the Coronavirus Covid-19.

An even more painful tragedy due to the fact that in the last two weeks, Angelo had also lost his mother and brother, both to the same illness.

Angelo disputed the WBC green and gold crown against Carlos De León, a fight that could not end as an injury prevented him.

Bergamo, a city near Milan where Rottoli was from, has been hit dramatically by the Coronavirus.
