Unbeaten featherweight Nick Ball is ready to take WBC Silver opportunity with both hands

Exclusive interview with Nick Ball ahead of biggest fight of his career

Undefeated British featherweight prospect Nick Ball (14-0, 7KOs) takes a huge step up in levels when he clashes with Isaac Lowe (21-1-3, 6KOs) this Saturday, April 23, at Wembley Stadium on the Tyson Fury vs Dillian Whyte Wembley Stadium event.

The featherweights will vye for the vacant WBC Silver belt, which has formerly been held by Nonito Donaire. The winner will be catapulted up the WBC world rankings in touching distance of a shot at the WBC World champion, Mark Magsayo.

On April 19, 25-year-old Ball, trained by Paul Stevenson at the Red Triangle gym in Liverpool, took part in the open workout at Boxpark Wembley, which is where he spoke to Danny Flexen from SecondsOut:

 

This open workout has been really well attended, just how excited are you heading into fight week now?

NB: “As soon as I got here, it was all real to me then, so I’m proper excited now! I’m trying to soak it all in, and then take this opportunity with both hands.”

 

You were in contention for the British title, this one is for an International belt instead - is this even better than a British title fight? 

“I think so, it’s in front of 94,000, the belt gets you ranked fifth in the world, so it’s above British level and definitely a better opportunity, in my eyes.”

 

You are an aggressive boxer-fighter, he's more of a slick backfoot boxer, so are you expecting your styles to mesh well?

“Yeah, they will. I feel like this is my time to show what I’m really about and this is the stage to do it on.”

 

Who have you been sparring with for this fight?

“The Yafai brothers, been going down to Sheffield so thanks to them, boss lads. Been sparring them for a couple of weeks.”

 

Do you think Isaac Lowe and his team have underestimated you after coming off a world level fight?

“I’ve been getting underestimated my whole life so its nothing new to me and always works out in my favour. I’d rather be underestimated and the underdog, if that’s the case.

 

What do you make of Isaac Lowe as a fighter?

“To be honest, I haven’t really seen much of him, I watched his last fight and hes a good fighter, he's game.”

 

Do you like to be described as an animal and someone who always goes for the knockout?

“That’s my style, getting straight on them, pressing, all action. Maybe in this fight I might show a bit of boxing, but we never know until Saturday.”

 

How to do you sixze up the main event between Dillian Whyte and Tyson Fury?

“I think Tyson wins, but with this boxing, one punch can change anything, especially in heavyweight boxing, so yeah I’m looking forward to it, but I'm more focused on my fight, to be honest.”
