Tyson Fury announces venue for the Anthony Joshua fight

Tyson Fury confirms the venue and location for his fight with Anthony Joshua

Tyson Fury shared an Instagram post today, September 1st, to tell everyone the location of his next fight with British rival Anthony Joshua - Madison Square Garden in New York, America.

The rumours of the all-British mega-fight moving abroad now seem to be confirmed, with the date mooted for November/December time.

Fury wrote: "What a place NYC, and what a venue MSG, and what a fight Fury vs AJ, the land of opportunity. What a weekend away for the lads on the p*ss in NYC. Iconic! Not long now guys!"

The post was paired with Frank Sinatra's 1980 hit, 'New York, New York.'

Madison Square Garden is one of the most famous boxing venues in the world, the iconic arena is steeped in history, having first staged boxing events there almost 150 years ago in 1879.

The "Fight of the Century" between American enemies Muhammad Ali (31–0) and Joe Frazier (26–0) took place there on March 8, 1971.

The undefeated champions were competing for the WBA, WBC, and The Ring heavyweight titles, in what was the first time in history that two undefeated boxers fought for the world heavyweight championship, making it one of the most anticipated sporting events ever.

The fight lived up to its hype with the heavyweight heroes producing the most spectacular sporting spectacle to draw over 300 million viewers worldwide, with Madison Square Garden packed with 20,455 fans and a gate of $1.5 million. Both world champions were handsomely paid $2,500,000 each.

Frazier won the fight that night unanimously, but their rivalry was starkly different to Fury-Joshua. Frazier and Ali were both aged under 30 and considered to be in their prime.

Fury, however, is now 38 and Joshua aged 36, both have shown significant signs of decline, very visibly past the peaks of powers.

The fight has been so long in the making that many exasperated boxing fans have become tired and bored with the wait and it now feels like the fight has lost a lot of it's allure and popularity.
