Mourning at the WBC for young, promising prospect Travell Mazion
The entire boxing family came together to mourn the death of super-welterweight prospect Travell Mazion (17-0, 13KOs), at just 24, due to a tragic car accident in Austin, Texas.
“Black Magic”, as Travell was known, was one of the most exciting promises of American boxing. Travell won the NABF super-welter weight title in January of this year by defeating Fernando Castañeda in less than one round. Previous holders of that belt have gone on to become world champions, such as Andy Lee, Yuri Foreman, Ronald Wright.
Reports have said that Mazion was travelling in his 2010 Cadillac STS at around 9:40pm when he crossed the center median onto oncoming traffic where he collided head-on with a Honda Pilot. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the Honda, a 61-year-old man, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions issued a statement saying, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Travell Mazion. Mazion was kind, charismatic young man who lit up every room he walked into and brought excitement to fans inside the ring. We send out heartfelt prayers and thoughts to his family. May he rest in peace."
Mazion's promoter Oscar De La Hoya also tweeted that "the word had lost a good one."
The WBC and its president Mauricio Sulaimán also joined the Travell family and friends in prayers during these very difficult times.
Boxing Agent Rick Glaser added, "Very sad ending to a guy that had a big future in boxing. RIP Travell Mazion."
