The 'Pride of Peckham' Johnny Garton retires from boxing

Former British welterweight champion Johnny Garton (24-2-1, 10KOs) has shocked many with his surprising announcement on May 31 that he has officially retired from boxing, despite having a rematch with Chris Jenkins for the British and Commonwealth 147lbs titles lined up next .

The 33-year-old, known as 'The Pexican', wrote these plaintive words on Facebook on the evening of May 31:

"Writing this is breaking my heart because I love this sport so much, I have decided it’s time to call it a day and hang up my gloves. Due to circumstance I am unable to give a 100% to this sport and that isn’t good enough for me. I achieved my dream and had the privilege of lifting the Lonsdale belt and winning titles along the way proving so many people wrong time and time again.

Huge thank you goes out to my team at the ibox gym who are more like a family to me. They have been there for my boxing and personal problems over the years Alan smith, Eddie Lam , Paul Taylor, @mickythegent

Comments poured in in support of Garton, who won the Southern Area, English, IBF European, and British weltereight titles during his nine-year professional career.

Promoter Lee Eaton said, "What a career. You acheived more than most boxers ever will. Be proud John boy."

Trainer John Cole added, "Enjoy your retirement with the family, you have acheived so much, well done John."

Former Southern Area and WBO Inter-Continental super-featherweight champion George Jupp commented, "Well done John, you can be proud of yourself mate."
