Terence Crawford held at gunpoint by police in Omaha hours after victory celebrations

Mayor of Omaha revealed an investigation is underway

Three-weight undisputed champion Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford was ticketed and held at gunpoint by Omaha police in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The event unfolded mere hours after ‘Bud’s’ victory parade, where he was celebrating his monumental win over Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez earlier in the month .

The hometown hero had been celebrating his achievement with the local community, having become something of a legend in the state of Nebraska.

In a statement from the Police, they have revealed that the traffic stop occurred shortly before 1.30 am, after they observed a vehicle driving “recklessly” on the road.

“While speaking with the driver [Crawford], an officer observed a firearm on the driver’s side floorboard. For safety, all four occupants were ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint,” police stated.

“One passenger, a member of Crawford’s security team, was also found to be carrying a legal firearm. Police have confirmed that all occupants are legally permitted to carry firearms.”

Omaha’s Mayor, John W. Ewing, took to Facebook to reiterate the seriousness of the event that unfolded.

“I acknowledge the seriousness of what occurred and how trust between law enforcement and our community is important and shows the need to be continuously vigilant about building relationships,” Ewing wrote.

“My heart dropped in learning of this end to an otherwise wonderful day and evening celebrating our city’s world boxing champion. … [It] was a showing of joy and pride. Omaha needs to remember this important day as a good one while we seek answers to how it ended.

“We must ensure that every resident, no matter who they are, feels safe and respected in Omaha.”

Ewing has since ordered a review that will include an internal affairs investigation, ensuring that any misconduct is appropriately dealt with.

Terence Crawford has yet to comment on the situation that unfolded on Sunday morning.
