Mauricio Sulaiman hails Devin Haney as "greatest examples" of a WBC champion

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman spoke to gambling.com about when he first met Devin Haney as a young, aspiring amateur and where "The Dream" ranks in his P4P list now he is an undisputed and two-weight world champion.

Here's what he 54-year-old had to say:

Devin Haney – 2023’s joint fighter of the year by the WBC - what have you made of his performances?

MS: "He’s one of the greatest examples that we have at the WBC and myself because I met Devin Haney when he was an amateur fighter. I was in my room in Las Vegas and William Haney - the father - and Devin Haney walk in the room and see this kid who is well built and has a one million dollar smile and the dreams of becoming a world champion.

"This was when he was starting as an amateur. So, I met him and said I will always be by your side and they reached to us because he could not fight in the United States due to age so he fought in Tijuana many times because of the age and became the WBC Youth champion, then the International champion, then the Silver champion, then the interim and then became champion. Look at now where he is. A great platform in which we have walked side by side. I met with his father and he’s coming back to the WBC to see what are the plans and we will address it very soon."

MS: "There are so many great fighters, and even great ones fighting for the accolade pound for pound. You have Terence Crawford,Naoya Inoue, Tank Davis, Devin Haney, Canelo Alvarez, Tyson Fury, Oleksandr Usyk, Anthony Joshua and Artur Beterbiev. There are so many fighters that can be without any question selected as pound for pound number one by different groups or people. You have at least 10 fighters who are vying for that accolade so it’s a great time in boxing."
