Rematch given a whole different dimension as the champion fails to make weight for Leigh wood rematch
‘Leigh-thal’ Leigh Wood (26-3, 16KO) weighed in without drama at 125.9lbs but the champion Mauricio ‘Bronco’ Lara (26-2-1, 19KO) caused a fuss as he came in well over the 126lbs featherweight limit at 129.8lbs.
The pair are due to clash in a highly anticipated rematch tomorrow night - Saturday, May 27 - in Manchester, live on DAZN.
Lara coming in at almost 4lbs overweight means the Mexican has lost his WBA World featherweight title on the scales and the belt will only be on the line for former holder, Wood, tomorrow night.
Wood's trainer, Ben Davision, suggested the fight may not go ahead due to the disparity in weight, however, it seems Nottingham's Wood is raring to go and ready to regain his title still, despite the discrepancy on the scales.
Promoter Eddie Hearn cleared up the weight issue, "Over the last couple of days, obviously both boxers making championship weight, at the British Boxing board of Control check-weight on fight week, they weren't happy with Mauricio Lara's weight at the time. They eventually made the decision Mauricio Lara cannot weigh less than 128.5lbs on the scales.
"Leigh Wood - they were very happy with his weight at the check-weights - he is allowed to make championship weight, he can win the world title on Saturday night. The WBA will make their own individual ruling.
"Mauricio Lara will be angry and frustrated, and he will want to come out victorious on Saturday night, but, ultimately, nothing changes for Leigh Wood, victory will see him become two-time world champion."
