Jai Opetaia talks undisputed and Zuffa Boxing debut ahead of Las Vegas showdown

Jai Opetaia doesn't seem like a heavyweight switch in his near future

Jai Opetaia (29-0, 23 KOs) is returning to the ring this Sunday, taking on Brandon Glanton (21-3, 28 KOs) in the maiden Zuffa Boxing card.

The bout, hosted in Las Vegas, marks Dana White’s first major venture into the boxing world. 

Opetaia has cemented himself as a devastating puncher in the cruiserweight division, with many of the opinion that his ferocious power would suit the heavyweight division should he choose to make the jump.

However, speaking to Sky Sports, The Australian is adamant that his eyes are firmly set on undisputed status at 200 lbs before he considers a move to boxing's most dangerous division.

"Undisputed first. Once we become undisputed, we can think about something else. But I'm chasing these belts like I've said for a long, long time," Opetaia told Sky Sports.

"I feel like sitting here talking about him [Usyk] like I'm trying to call him out just for clout is silly," Opetaia added. "I find it disrespectful.

"It's unrealistic. Both of our pathways are heading in different directions right now. I feel like it's silly to sit and try and disrespect one of the best fighters in the world right now.”

Breaking down his move to Zuffa, Opetaia sees Whites new venture as the future of modern-day boxing, revealing that he is excited to be joining the project so early on.

"I feel like this is going to be a new chapter in boxing. This Zuffa belt is going to mean something and I'm going to be the first to hold the Zuffa belt. And if everything goes according to plan I'll be the first ever undisputed with the Zuffa," the Australian noted.

"It definitely does make it more exciting.”
