History-making undisputed champion sadly passes away aged 83

The World Boxing Council mourn the passing of their first Panamanian champion, Ismael Laguna

 The World Boxing Council, its President Mauricio Sulaimán, and the entire Green and Gold family deeply mourn the passing of one of the greatest giants to ever emerge from Panamanian soil: Ismael Laguna Meneses, the “Tigre de Colón,” who passed away at the age of 83 on September 8, 2026.

Two-time undisputed lightweight champion Ismael Laguna was not only a virtuoso inside the ring; his name was etched in gold in the history of the organization as he became the first fighter of Panamanian origin to capture a WBC World Championship.

That unforgettable feat took place in April 1965 at the Juan Demóstenes Arosemena National Stadium—the first world title fight ever held in Panama City—where he defeated the legendary Puerto Rican Carlos Ortiz after a historic battle to claim the lightweight throne.

Born in Colón on June 28, 1943, Laguna gifted the world a majestic career spanning from 1960 to 1971.

With an orthodox style, refined technique, gliding lateral movement, and a unique shoulder elegance, the “Tigre de Colón” wrote glorious chapters against the elite of the 135-pound golden era, starring in memorable clashes against icons such as Nicolino Locche, Flash Elorde, and Ken Buchanan.

In March 1970, Laguna once again demonstrated his warrior pedigree by becoming a two-time lightweight world champion after defeating Mando Ramos in Los Angeles, later successfully defending his Green and Gold crown at home against Japan’s Guts Ishimatsu.

He retired with an impressive record of 65 wins (37 by knockout), 9 losses, and 1 draw, leaving an indelible mark of courage: he was never knocked out nor cut inside the ring.

Laguna was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001.

The WBC added, "We extend our deepest condolences, love, and prayers to his family, friends, and the entire people of Panama during this time of profound grief.

"Rest in peace, Champion. Your light and your fierce spirit will live forever in the WBC."
