Five of the best rivalries between Mexicans
On February 20, we will witness a long-awaited fight between the super featherweight champion of the World Boxing Council, Miguel “Alacrán” Berchelt and the former undefeated world champion, Oscar Valdez.
28-year-old Berchelt, (37-1 with 33 knockouts), has made six successful super featherweight title defenses, while 29-year-old Valdez (27-0, 21 knockouts) stepped up to the 130lbs division in 2019 after a solid campaign at 126lbs.
Bouts between Mexicans always generate high expectations for the electrifying fights they have given us. Today we will remember five of the best rivalries between Mexicans:
Barrera vs. Morales
Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales starred in three fantastic fights, where they showed their quality and confirmed their lasting legacy.
The two warriors never disappointed the public, and their fights are listed on many fans' favourie rivalries and trilogies of all-time.
Two victories went to Barrera and one to Morales.
Vazquez vs. Marquez
Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez fought four times, achieving two wins each.
Both offered real wars from the first bell, and showed the world that the only thing that mattered to them was to achieve victory.
Olivares vs Castillo
In the 70s, the rivalry between Rubén “Púas” Olivares and Jesús Castillo arose, who served up a thrilling trilogy.
In all three bouts, both showed their great heart.
Castillo won two bouts while Olivares won one.
Zarate vs Zamora
The fight between Carlos Zarate and Alfonso Zamora was called “The Battle of the Z”.
The combat was fantastic, where both champions went into the ring to show who was the best bantamweight of their era.
The winner was Zarate by technical knockout.
Estrada vs Cuadras
Juan Francisco Estrada and Carlos Cuadras gave us two great bouts of alternate dominance, where Estrada won the victory in both. However, Cuadras sold the defeat dearly and showed great heart.
