Evander Holyfield is training for Mike Tyson trilogy fight: "My team is talking to Mike’s team, so I’m waiting"

“Iron” Mike Tyson returned to the ring in an excellent exhibition fight against another legendary fighter, Roy Jones Jr., on November 28, 2020, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, and now there’s the prospect of a third clash with old rival Evander Holyfield.

The pair are presently in talks over a trilogy fight despite their combined age of 112.

Holyfield told The Sun newspaper: “The thing is, if it’s meant to happen, it will happen. What I can tell you is that my team is talking to Mike’s team, so I’m waiting. It’s a decision that Mike has to make and we both have to come to an agreement.”

The 58-year-old Georgian continued, “I am training for this because I know that one day this agreement will come, and I am ready. I feel very good. We can always help people; I try to convey the kindness that they taught me. I think if I fight Mike, it will be the biggest fight there is.”

For Mike Tyson, it's a shot at redemption against Evander Holyfield, having lost to 'The Real Deal' twice during his 20-year career, suffering back to back defeats between November 1996 and June 1997. Tyson lost his WBA World heavyweight title in a shock defeat to challenger Holyfield, who was 32-3 at the time, in their first fight, then was disqualified in their rematch when he infamously bit part of his opponent's ear off.

Iron Mike's last four fights as a professional puncher saw him lost three times - to undisputed heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis; Brit Danny Williams, who is still actively fighting today; and Irish-American Kevin McBride.

He made a shock comeback in 2020, coming out of retirement after 15 years for an exhibition bout with former four-weight champion Roy Jones Jr.

The eight-round fight ended in a draw behind-closed-doors, with Holyfield watching on. The 'Real Deal' last fought in 2011 but he was inspired to get back in the gym after Tyson's return.

American hero, Tyson, donated his £7.5m purse from the Jones Jr fight to 'various charities' and Holyfield believes a third fight would bank a staggering £150m.
