Errol Spence Jr. set for ring return after car accident to defend unified welterweight crown

Errol Spence Jr. has not fought since September and was left recovering with horror facial injuries and scars in freak accident in October

World Boxing Council welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. will defend his crown against former world champion, Danny Garcia, on November 21, in a FOX Pay-Per-View match.

The venue of the fight is not yet known, but undefeated Errol Spence, Jr. (26-0, 21 KOs) will return to the ring for the first time, after suffering a car accident last October, from which he is fully recovered.

Danny “Swift” Garcia (36-2, 21 KOs), who reigned as world super lightweight and welterweight champion, will seek to regain his lost world title in a close decision to Shawn Porter.

The American champion's trainer Derrick James believes that Spence's fitness is still at its peak, and that he will be ready for the punch power of Garcia despite his injuries from last year.

He said to The Pug and Cop: “He looks good. I don’t see anything lingering, my job is to see if there are any deficiencies and to see if he’s not reacting fast enough. He looks good. His hand speed is there, and his body is right.  I want what he wants, but if there were any deficiencies and if his reaction time wasn’t right, those are things we’ve been gauging for months.

We’ve been in the gym since last March, and everything looks OK and good. He’s doing everything right, and everything is great".

The American has been propelled into the limelight after his accident and publicity with his undefeated record, and James believes that Danny Garcia is capable of giving him huge problems, with a lot of pressure at stake.

“I have a lot of respect for him because when he faces the top guys, he’s never the favorite, he always shows up, and he’s fighting elite guys. Even with Keith Thurman, it was very close, and with Shawn Porter, it was very close. He knows what type of fighter he is and what he brings to the table. With Errol, it’ll be a different type of fight, but at the same time, it’ll be very dangerous. He’s coming to win the fight, all the other guys thought they could beat him. Lucas Matthysse, Amir Khan and Shawn Porter, but a lot of people think he can’t beat Errol Spence.

“The fact that people count him out makes him stand up and be a little tougher as an opponent. Danny’s a great puncher, but fights are about strategy. Just like in the Shawn Porter fight, he [Spence] wanted to beat Shawn Porter at what he does best.”

'Swift" Garcia has certainly been around the block during his time in the welterweight division beating the likes of Amir Khan and Paul Malignaggi during his professional career, and has held multiple world championships in two weight classes, including the unified WBA (Super), WBC, The Ring magazine and lineal light welterweight titles between 2012 and 2015, and the WBC welterweight title from 2016 to 2017.

An intriguing contest is set to be expected between the two fighters, with a degree of uncertainty clouding the future of Spence after his injuries, and a real opportunity appearing to open up for Garcia to reclaim a world title once again and shoot into the top level of the welterweight division.
