Dan Azeez has had some family worries due to the COVID-19 pandemic

English light-heavyweight champion Dan Azeez has opened up about his family’s recent struggles with COVID-19 – revealing that his mother has been battling the illness.

Azeez (11-0, 7 KOs) was seen as one of the best rising stars in the UK before boxing was halted due to the pandemic, and he has discussed how his family has been impacted over the last few weeks.

The 30-year-old Londoner told Unknown Boxers: “Not many people know but my mum contracted the virus and has been in hospital for three weeks.

“She was in a real bad way and was in the ICU. They weren’t sure if she was going to make it and it wasn’t look good.

“As the weeks went on she’s got better and has come out of the ICU, but is still under their care so it’s been tough. I actually thought I would lose my mum.

“I’ve never been in that predictament before, I’ve had friends that have lost their lives, but for it to be your mum. It’s very difficult, but thankfully she’s getting better.”

The 5ft 10" 175-pounder didn't start boxing competitively until he was at university, where he acheived a degree in Accounting and Finance. He boxed under the tutelage of Gordon Charlesworth in Colchester and had over 60 amateur contests, crowned ABA South of England champion three times.

Unbeaten in 11 contests as a pro, Azeez had a standout year last year in 2019, with five wins from fivbouts and two titles in the form of the Southern Area and English Champonships. Managed by MTK Global, Dan Azeez will be looking for the British title next.
