Fight Preview

The born rivals, Chris Eubank Jr. (35-3, 25 KOs) and Conor Benn (23-1, 14 KOs), reignited their famous fathers' epic rivalry last April and lived up their family names by providing the sell-out crowd in Spurs' stadium with an all-out war for 12 thrilling rounds.

Career welterweight Benn jumped up two divisions to middleweight to make this fight happen. Eubank Jr. has campaigned most of his career at middleweight, winning British, WBA Interim and IBO world titles at 160, but now aged 36, with stints up at super-middleweight, it appears that making the 11st 4lbs weight limit is a big ask.

Despite missing weight and paying Benn a huge fine of almost half-a-million, Eubank took the decision unanimously at ringside with all three scores agreed at 116-112. At first, it appeared a little wide for such a close contest that had swung back and forth, but eight rounds to four was an accurate result. All three judges thought so, and so too did a poll of 303 fans on BoxRec, who scored it ever so slightly closer at 115-113.

Eubank took the first round comfortably, as Benn struggled to close the distance, wildly overreaching and overloading on his shots, but then the welterweight from Essex got back on top in rounds two and three, landing quick counter rights and one-twos, even scoring a huge left hook to the head to stagger Eubank, who had to hold on for a moment.

By round four, Eubank found his second wind and took over the contest, controlling the fight behind his rangier jab and left hook, slightly busier and better in the exchanges, displaying his vaster experience and ringcraft.

When the pair fought in closer proximity in rounds eight to 10, Benn was able to win a couple more rounds, but Eubank closed the show strongly during the championship rounds.

When they came out for the final round, Eubank Jr. flew at Benn and pushed him back to the ropes where they exchanged ferociously right up to the final bell, each man emptying the tank.

Benn has promised to be more patient and less emotional in the rematch, and Eubank Jr. has reiterated that it will be 'parliamentary procedure' again.

Tim Rickson , BBN Editor: "I scored the first fight eight rounds to four, so I know there were a few voices that said the scores of 116-112 were too wide, but they were completely accurate, in my view. It was a fun fight, a great watch, it far exceeded my expectations, and kudos to both men for giving it their all.

"Benn probably has the bigger mountain to climb to win the rematch. I'm adamant that he hurt Eubank in that third round with the huge left hook to the head, although Eubank has dismissed it since, but he instantly had to hold, so I believe that Benn does possess the power to hurt him. If he can produce a fight-changing moment like that, but this time capitalise upon it, then he has a good chance of causing an upset.

"However, Eubank Jr. proved that he was smarter, better, bigger, more experienced, composed, and ring savvy in their first fight. He just has to come to the ring and do all of the same, but he will need to be prepared for an improved version of Benn, who is getting better with each fight.

"Benn let his emotions take over, overloading and overreaching, missing wildly at times. He's talked a lot about staying calm in the rematch, but he still needs to apply lots of pressure and aggression. His quick right hand was effective, his explosiveness is his best attribute, he needs to use that speed to full effect, but he has to improve on his inside game, because Eubank got the better of their close exchanges before. Benn needs to get inside, land his shots, then exit cleanly, which is very hard to do. He got caught on the inside a lot, Eubank was much more savvy in close.

"I'm going for Eubank Jr. to win by decision again, perhaps a bit closer on the scorecards this time, as I think it will be more technical and less of a slugfest, at least to start with, and I don't expect the rematch to live up to the first battle they had."
