Carlos Adames confirmed as WBC middleweight Champion

WBC Interim middeweight champion Carlos Adames has been elevated to WBC World middleweight champion after the holder Jermall Charlo was stripped this week.

The World Boxing Council named Adames their new champion after Charlo was arrested on suspicion of drink driving in Texas.

Police in the Houston suburb of Pearland arrested the 33-year-old unbeaten two-weight world champion on Monday night, May 6. According to the police report, Jermall's blood-alcohol level was measured at over 0.15, which is twice the legal limit. He had struck another vehicle on the road and then fled from police.

The WBC confirmed they will continue to do as much as possible to support Jermall Charlo during his difficult times with regards to Mental Wellness.

Charlo first became a world champion in 2015 when he won the IBF super-welterweight belt, which he defended three times before moving up to middleweight.

He too was elevated from Interim to full world champion in 2019, and defended the middleweight green and gold belt on three occasions, remaining unbeaten in 33 fights to date.

However, he last defended the title in 2021, almost three full years ago, but his last fight was only in November last year, decisioning Jose Benavidez over 12-rounds in Las Vegas.

Dominican Republic's Carlos Adames, 30, has suffered just one loss in 24 bouts, which came in 2019 when challenging for the WBO Interim super-welterweight title.

Since moving up to middleweight, he has won all five fights, four by KO. In his last two fights, he won the WBC Interim middleweight belt and defended it successfully once, but they remain his only two outings in well over two years.

Now Adames has been bestowed with the WBC World middleweight honours, no doubt he will be a man very much in demand, with the likes of Brits Hamzah Sheeraz, Chris Eubank Jr., Nathan Heaney and Denzel Bentley all sniffing around, as well as Americans Austin Williams and Shane Mosley Jr.
