Canelo Alvarez set for Cinco de Mayo clash against Billy Joe Saunders after Avni Yildirim title defence

Pound-for-Pound number one Canelo set to face Billy Joe Saunders in US live on DAZN in May

Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez is reported to have agreed a deal to fight British super middleweight Billy Joe Saunders in a bumper fight live on DAZN during the period of Cinco De Mayo.

Alvarez will take on Avni Yildirim in February in a mandatory title defence, and will progress on to another Briton should he win and come through the clash unscathed.

He will defend his WBC and WBA super middleweight titles, with the fight taking place in America in May with the date set to be selected by the unified champion.

According to The Athletic , the fight could take place on May 1 or May 8 and will land on global streaming network DAZN but will not be broadcasted in Mexico.

The fight was set to take place in 2020, but talks collapsed after financial issues which ultimately triggered Canelo's dispute with Golden Boy Promotions .

Canelo dethroned another British super middleweight champion in Callum Smith in December of last year, while Saunders dispatched of Martin Murray where he looked sharp and ready to face a top-level test.
