Canelo Alvarez ordered to fight Avni Yildirim by WBC for vacant super middleweight championship

WBC Board of Governors voted 36-1 to order multi division world champion Alvarez to fight Yildirim

Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2 36KOS) has been ordered by the World Boxing Council to face Avni Yildirim (21-2 12KOS) for the WBC vacant super middleweight championship in the next fight for the pound for pound top fighter.

Multi division world champion Alvarez has been linked with a mega fight with Briton Callum Smith in recent weeks for the vacant belt and as a title defence, but it has now been enforced that he will fight Yildirim instead.

The Mexican middleweight is a four-division world champion. He has held the WBA (Super), The Ring and lineal middleweight titles, and the WBA (Regular) super middleweight title since 2018. He also previously held the WBA (Unified), WBC and The ring magazine light middleweight titles between 2011 and 2013; the WBC (twice), Ring and lineal middleweight titles between 2015 and 2019; the WBO light middleweight title from 2016 to 2017; and the IBF middleweight and WBO light heavyweight titles in 2019.

He has been out of action since the recent pandemic has brought fight proceedings to a halt, with his last outing coming back in November, an 11th-round knockout victory against Sergey Kovalev to claim the WBO light heavyweight title.

His opponent will be coming into the fight on the back of a defeat against Anthony Dirrell back in February, and will be looking to capitalise on his chance to become a world champion once again.
