Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will fight for WBA Super heavyweight world title

Despite Murat Gassiev becoming primary WBA champion when Oleksandr Usyk vacated his titles in June, it seems the Russian will now return to being the 'regular' titleholder.

It's a remarkable ruling from the sanctioning body, as the WBA has previously said it would be phasing out regular belts.

They have 'regular' champions as secondary world champions and 'super' champions as the proper, primary titleholders.

At the time of vacating his heavyweight belts, Usyk was, of course, the 'super' WBA heavyweight champion while Gassiev held the 'regular' belt.

Although he was upgraded from secondary to full WBA heavyweight champion, Gassiev never technically received the 'super' crown.

Jarrell Miller will also feel hard done by, as he is currently ranked No.1 by the WBA and defeated Lenier Pero on points in a title eliminator in April.

Fury and Joshua are No.2 and No.3, respectively, but will nonetheless get the chance to become world champion again in December.

This has led to speculation about whether other sanctioning bodies will get involved with Fury vs AJ due to the reported $200million purse on offer.

Fury is ranked No.1 by the WBC and Joshua is No.2, meaning they could put their 'interim' belt on the line, with Agit Kabayel the current WBC heavyweight titleholder.

The WBC could offer a commemorative belt, too, and put the interim one on the line to make sure they get a slice of the purse.

Commemorative titles don't get percentages of purses, but interim ones do.

Elsewhere, Fury and Joshua are also ranked in the top three by the WBO, behind Usyk and champion Daniel Dubois.

As for the IBF, Fury is No.5 and Joshua is No.3, with Bakhodir Jalolov, Frank Sanchez and Filip Hrgovic making up the rest of the top five.

AJ is IBO #3 and Fury IBO #4.

Speaking to talkSPORT on Thursday, Fury’s promoter Frank Warren confirmed there was no rematch clause in place for the fight before offering his prediction.

"[There isn't a rematch clause], no, not at the moment," he said.

"We will see how the fight plays out — it will be an exciting fight because there is so much on the line, there is so much history between them.

"If it is a great fight, then I am sure it is something they will do again if that is the case.

"I really do fancy Tyson in a big way for this one, though…

"They are both very wealthy young men who are coming to the end of their careers.

"I think the loser will go off into the sunset unless it is a close fight or a split decision and then they may do it again.”
