Angel Raymond Morejon stops Willy Kyakonye
The sold-out Koninklijk Theater Carré in Amsterdam, packed with an enthusiastic crowd of 1,500 fans, served as the stage for an electrifying night of international boxing.
In the main event of the evening, held this past Monday, October 12, the undefeated Cuban fighter residing in Italy, Ángelo Raymond Morejón (12-0, 9 KOs), was crowned as the new WBC Silver Bridgerweight Champion by stopping Ugandan boxer based in the Netherlands, Willy Kyakonye (14-0, 13 KOs), via a third-round technical knockout.
The contest between the two unbeaten boxers opened with drama and intensity from the very first round.
After receiving an accidental low blow from Kyakonye, international referee Joel Campuzano Jr. reacted promptly, granting Morejón the official time needed to recover. Showing impressive resilience, the Cuban contender returned to action with determination and, with just 10 seconds remaining in the opening round, unleashed a powerful combination that sent Kyakonye to the canvas. Although the African boxer beat the count visibly hurt, the round concluded with a decisive 10-8 score in favour of the Caribbean fighter.
In the second round, Morejón maintained absolute control of the action inside the squared circle, dictating the pace with superior reach and precision to secure the round 10-9 on the scorecards.
The definitive outcome arrived in the third round. Launching an unrelenting attack, 30-year-old Morejón dropped Kyakonye once again with sharp, accurate combinations. Recognising the severity of the punishment at 1:08 of the round, Kyakonye’s chief cornerman, Vincent Stikkolorum, immediately threw in the towel to stop the fight and safeguard his fighter’s wellbeing.
With this emphatic victory, the Italian champion Ángelo Morejón extends his undefeated professional record to 13-0 with 10 knockouts, firmly establishing himself in the upper echelon of the WBC world rankings and staking his claim for a future opportunity at the absolute 224-pound world title.
